Hugh: Netflix to Introduce Cheaper Subscription Plans That Feature Ads

Someday soon you may be sitting through an ad while streaming your favourite shows. Following a reported loss of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter of this year, Netflix will shift to accommodate cheaper plans. The price of subscription to the streaming service has steadily risen over the last few years, and now a major loss of customers has the company re-thinking its ad-free approach. Tuesday, the streaming giant revealed that over the next year or two, they’ll offer cheaper, ad-supported subscription tiers. Netflix had repeatedly been asked over its history if it would consider bringing ads to the platform, and they’ve always shut it down. We don’t know exactly when these new plans will be rolled out, how many ads there will be, or what the new prices will look like, so there’s still a lot to pay attention to as the story develops.
