Hugh: Many Canadians Reporting Long Wait Times for Passport Applications

If you’re thinking of travelling out of the country any time soon, you should probably take a quick look at your passport. Several Canadians are reporting long wait times for passport applications amid a surge of demand for international travel. Service Canada says between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021, they issued 363,000 passports. Compare that to 1,273,000 the following year (April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022) and you can see how much the demand has changed. A spokesperson says, “Service Canada recognizes that an increase in demand for passport services has resulted in lineups and longer wait times for service, and we understand the concern this may cause for clients. Earlier this month, the department says that the average processing time for passports is between 5 and 25 days. So, if you’ve got a long-awaited trip on your calendar, you should probably get that passport renewed sooner rather than later.
