Hugh: How to prevent mask-related acne

While it’s far from the biggest crisis right now, many people are finding that wearing a mask for long periods of time has resulted in acne breakouts. Dr. Theresa Devere, chief of dermatology at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, has offered a few tips for avoiding ‘maskne’:

  1. Simply washing your face more. Using a gentle moisturiser that doesn’t clog pores, as well as a non-soap cleanser on your face, will remove oils and dirt without drying out the skin.
  2. Wear less makeup. Either avoid applying makeup on areas covered by a mask, or instead of makeup, use tinted moisturisers, which are lighter and won’t clog your pores
  3. If you wear a cotton mask, wash it frequently. Having a few to use in rotation is a good idea. If you use a disposable medical mask, replace it often.
