For those getting excited for the hockey season, today brought a couple surprises. First, the Newfoundland Growlers announced their Training Camp roster online, which includes seven Newfoundlanders. Fans will recognize returning local players like Captain James Melindy of the Goulds, as well as Zach O’Brien and Nathan Noel, both of St. John’s. Jordan Escott registered two games with the Growlers last year and will return for this year’s Training Camp. Brett Budgell, Kyle McGrath, and Doug Pippy are all fellow St. John’s natives who will enter camp with the Toronto Maple Leaf’s ECHL affiliate. Growlers Training Camp opens Wednesday, October 12th. The club also announced when the public can get their first look at the team, and it’s coming up soon. This Saturday, October 15th, the Newfoundland Growlers will be holding an open practice at the C.B.S. Arena where they opened up last season on a temporary basis. The practice will run from 10:00-11:30AM and is free of charge for the public to attend.

The Growlers’ season starts Friday, October 21st at the Mary Brown’s Centre with a game against the rival Reading Royals.
