The hottest happy hour in Helsinki, Finland, isn’t even at a bar–it’s at a supermarket. Every night at 9, a grocery store called S-market deeply discounts various foods that are about to spoil. The New York Times reports that one customer snagged a container of pork mini-ribs and two pounds of pork tenderloin for just $4.63. The United Nations estimates that about one-third of all food produced and packaged for human consumption is lost or wasted. (Worldwide, that equals 1.3 billion tons a year, worth nearly $680 billion.) But while efforts to combat food waste are spreading throughout Europe, they’ve yet to really catch on in the United States.
