The pandemic has been especially hard on the service industry and those who work in it, so it was nice to see widespread trends of tipping more generously when things like restaurants and bars began to re-open. Now, according to new data from the company Square, we’re seeing that Canadians are continuing to leave higher tips. On average, Canadian consumers are leaving tips of 17.9% on face-to-face purchases, up from 16.6% prior to the pandemic. Of course it’s hard to tie the rise in tipping service workers to one cause in particular, but those behind the study say it’s a good showing of the empathy Canadians have for each other.
