Hugh: Canada Ranked Fourth Best Country for Raising Children, USA Eighteenth

The United States is at a dismal #18 on the list of best places to raise children. Canada, Australia and several countries place higher in the list, according to the Best Countries report, which is done every year by U.S. News & World Report and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The report says that Denmark, Sweden and Norway are overall the top countries to raise a child. “These countries tend to have generous paternal leave and maternal leave, offer free preschool and have good overall public education systems,” said a senior editor. The U.S. is also #32 for safety. However, the United States does hold the top spot in education. To arrive at their lists, the Best Countries report evaluated 73 nations across 65 different metrics and surveyed more than 20,000 people across the world. Here are the top 10 countries for raising children:

  1. Denmark
  2. Sweden
  3. Norway
  4. Canada
  5. Netherlands
  6. Finland
  7. Switzerland
  8. New Zealand
  9. Australia
  10. Austria
